Silliness

Look at this little knothead ...

Needless to say, she didn't start out that way. And I'm not too sure how she ended up like that, other than all the scooting we've been doing lately.

She was totally happy about it though, so who am I to say what's fun for an almost-6 month old.

What a little goofball :)

Me? Really?

Wow, y'all. I have just received my first blog award!

Mucho thanks to Maria at From Both Sides of the White Picket Fence for sharing the bloggy love. This definitely put a smile on my face :)

So, now I get to continue the bloggy-love-sharing by bestowing this "One Lovely Blog Award" on some of my favorite places to visit.

The rules are as follows: Accept the award, post it on your blog together with the name of the person who has granted the award, and his or her blog link. Pass the award to 15 other blogs that you’ve newly discovered. Remember to contact the bloggers to let them know they have been chosen for this award.

So, friends, here are the blogs I visit the most (though I don't think I'll make it to 15!):

Sophie at BooMama

Shelley at Making Memories

Emily at Powell Power

Nikki at South Family

Justine at Almost There

Brandi at The Life of a Small Town Girl - even though she's an Alabama fan ;)

Shana at Blaze'n'Crochet

Relativity

Does this face look familiar?

Nope. Not Maggie. Here she is ...

I've been told I have a Mini-Jennie, and I'm providing photographic evidence from my Mom since ... well ... that first picture is me.

My mom has been telling us all how much Maggie looks like I did as a baby, but I have never really been able to see it. Until she dug this picture out.

And all I could say was ... oh my.

Guess I can't deny that she's mine! Not that I ever would :)

I Heart Brownies: Show Us Your Life 09.25.09

Well, I can't take credit for this recipe - seems to be a trend here, doesn't it? Though, I suppose most people who share recipes aren't the originators of said recipes, so I'll not obsess over my lack of recipe-creating genius.

First, I just want to say that I Love Brownies. A lot. Which would explain my pants size. Anyhoo ... today's blog carnival theme over at Kelly's Korner is 'Favorite Dessert Recipe' and so, even though there are some very good and beautiful dessert recipes I could share, I have to go with brownies. They just warm my heart, and how could I deny public adulation for a treat that has given me such comfort :)

I'll be honest. I have not yet met a brownie I haven't liked, though I'm a bit a simplist where brownies are concerned. There are some very good brownies out there that add nuts or cream cheese or peanut butter or whathaveyou, and I will eat them up, no problem. However, when I have a choice, they are always just plain ole brownies. Nothing fancy. Just warm gooey deliciousness.

So, since I'm not too particular so long as it's a brownie (seriously, I'm happy with the box mix when in a brownie-needing pinch), I will share Hubby's favorite brownie recipe. This recipe is from his mom - I don't know where she got it from, but when Hubby hears 'brownies', these are what he expects! Enjoy!

Super Brownies

* 2 squares unsweetened chocolate (I like Baker's)
* 1/2 cup butter
* 1 cup sugar
* 2 eggs
* 1 teaspoon vanilla
* 3/4 cup flour (I like White Lily)

Place chocolate and butter in microwave safe bowl. Microwave at 75% Power one minute at a time, stirring after each minute, until creamy and blended. Add sugar and mix well. Temper eggs in separate bowl, then add to chocolate mixture. Add vanilla and mix well. Add flour and stir until well blended.

Pour batter into buttered 8x8 pan. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.

Missing My Girl

Most mornings I don't know how I leave this sweet face to go to work.

I would totally get fired eventually if I didn't but still ... it's hard being a working mom.

Don't get me wrong. I need to work for our family and am glad to have my job during these difficult economic times. It's just that I feel like I'm missing out on so much time with my baby girl. She's not going to be this little forever - actually, when you think about it in relation to the average lifespan, her infancy is super-short!

So, since I can't be with her all day like I wish, I have surrounded my workspace with pictures of her, especially my computer wallpaper.

Which looks like this:

I know y'all have seen my first Maggie-collage before, but I love it too much not to share again :)

And come 4:00 pm, I'll be barrelling down the highway to Nana's house to love up my girl.

Um ... what time is it now?

Long-Winded Diatribe

You've been warned.

Okay. So, I've mentioned before that I dislike politics. Maybe it's because of all the arguing and confrontation, and I just can't deal with that, but whatever it is, I don't enjoy it. Really really.

Hubby, however, loves him some politics. So much so that he purposefully and on a daily basis tunes in to talk radio. TALK RADIO! I just don't get it on so many levels I am not even able to articulate. Talk radio - Blah!

But ...

Yep, there's a 'but'.

Whenever I exit my vehicle, I always turn off the radio and air, and have done so for years. (Like that segue?) Hubby does not. Ever. Even when driving someone else's Jeep. Since Hubby's Jeep does not have air conditioning and we live in the seventh circle of hell Arizona, on days he is in charge of Maggie-transport we swap Jeeps. And when I get back in mine ... you guessed it: it is blaring talk radio.

And apparently Hubby and talk radio are winning a battle I didn't know I was in, because I have actually started paying attention. I can't even believe I'm about to tell you this, but twice this past week I turned on the radio to the talking heads on purpose.

I think maybe therapy is called for.

Now, in all of this 'paying attention' I am now doing, I'm finding out all manner of things that I'd prefer not to know more about.

(As an fyi: I'm about to start venting here because, well, it's my blog and I can, and writing things out is my way of releasing stuff, and I am not in any way trying to start a political debate, so if you do decide to comment on any of this, please be nice. Because, you know, being my blog and all, I can erase that sucker quick-fast-and-in-a-hurry. Thank you.)

Anyhoo ... I am now very concerned that our country is going down the toilet and not even the Tidy Bowl Man will be around to help us out. We seem to be doing our level best to alienate everyone we like who likes us back, while also trying to get in good with the thugs of the world. I believe the president is woefully underqualified for the job he's trying to do; that Nancy Pelosi should be denied communion and have to take catechism lessons from her Bishop; and that the media is the biggest dadgummed political machine out there.

And the Tea Party Express? Stroke of genius. Copycat genius, but imitation is the highest form of flattery, and it worked way back in our country's infancy when we were demanding our rights.

Which we are allowed to do. All of us. Agree-ers and Disagree-ers. It is so important that our Founding Fathers made it #1 when they wrote the Bill of Rights:

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,
or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,
or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble,
and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances
.

So when the president says we should stop bickering, I wonder if what he really means is "just stop disagreeing with me". Because I truly believe he had no idea it would be so hard for him to just get done what he wanted to get done - he's the President AND his party has control of both Houses! You'd think his wishes would be a shoe-in.

Except that The People - not his people but The People - Americans - are voicing their opposition and are trying to tell him what is really needed and wanted here. And that, my friends, is awesome.

Now, if only he'll listen.

As for me, I believe the thing we need most is Jesus. He's been absent so long from this country that we are now reaping what has been sown, and it scares me.

2 Chronicles 7:14 says, "and if my people, upon whom my name has been pronounced, humble themselves and pray, and seek my presence and turn from their evil ways, I will hear them from heaven and pardon their sins and revive their land".

So pray, friends. Pray for our country. Pray for our leaders. Pray for our global human family. Let us humble ourselves before God and seek His forgiveness and guidance.

We need it.

This session has now ended. Thank you.

Our Big Little Girl

There's not a day that goes by that I'm not amazed at how much our Maggie has grown. She started out 7 weeks early, and only 4 lbs, 8 ounces when she came home, and now ...

And now.

It's like looking at a different kid, sometimes. She's about 12 lbs now, and has pudge on her legs, and though many of her 0-3 dresses still fit, she's wearing 3-6 onesies (her big ole cloth diaper helps with that!) We haven't quite rolled over yet, but we sure are trying! And she LOVES to stand up as long as someone helps (we're pretty wobbly!!) Ditto that with sitting up. She's 'talking' all the time, and has a smile that will just make you fall in love with her.

What a strong, healthly little girl we have!

Bubbly Baby

Updated: Y'all, it was 76 degrees when I left home this morning. And the high is expected to be 99. Can I get a 'halleuia'? Seriously. This is good news ;)

Original Post:

Can you see what we've learned to do recently?

It's now a favorite thing to do. Along with drooling, of course.

Teething time has officially reached our home, thus the bubbles and drool. And chewing on anything within reach, to include carnations, hair, Daddy's goatee, and cats, to name a few. (Who knew those pudgy little arms could reach so far?!) Maggie is doing really well about not being fussy because of pain or discomfort, so that is good, though I'm realistic enough to know it won't last. I'm just enjoying it while it does!

As mentioned above, Maggie got a good hold of Cosmo last week. I wasn't home to document it photographically, and Hubby apparently was more concerned about rescuing the cat from Maggie than taking a picture. I just can't imagine why :) Cosmo was very good about the whole thing, and according to Hubby, when Maggie grabbed a big ole handful of his scruff, he 'hit the deck' and just looked at Hubby, as if to say, "Um, what do I do now?" and just waited patiently for Hubby to help.

He's a goofball of a kitty, that Cosmo :) Here's a little of the fun they've been having together. I just love the look on Maggie's face in the bottom picture:

PS: Can you tell I've been goofing around with Picasa? Photography stuff is so fun! And thanks to Brent Riggs for his video tutorials ... allows even those of us who aren't super html people to fake it like a champ :)

Singin' In The ... Bar

I just wanted to share a video with y'all. It's Hubby and his band, Booya, a couple of weeks ago at a local gig. He starts out singing "Higher Ground" (an original written by the bass player) then goes right into "Sympathy for the Devil" by the Rolling Stones.

My Hubby, the Rock Star :)

Remembering 9/11

It's a little weird that I'm raising a child who will never know a world before 9/11 happened. That that day is now a part of the American History she will one day be learning in school. That something that impacted my world so much will be a blip in history to her.

Unless we do our jobs well as parents and make sure she knows and understands the importance of that day. And we will definitely strive to do that.

Please remember today not only those who lost their lives on 9/11 or whose lives were forever changed that day, but continue to keep in mind and prayer our service men and women who volunteer to serve us and our country. They deserve our love, support and prayers for doing a job most of us wouldn't want to do.

God Bless America.

A Birthday and Football

Maggie went to her first "1st Birthday" party this past weekend. Hailey, the daughter of our friends Steve and Jessica, turned one last week, and we went to her party on Saturday. I just love 1st Birthday parties - they're just so cute!

Here's the Birthday Girl:

Isn't she adorable? I just love her red hair!

Maggie had a lovely time, and went relaxed in jean shorts and a cute top:

After the party, we all went home to enjoy the rest of College Football Saturday. We're teaching our girl to L.O.V.E. college football from an early age:

(Look at those cheeks!!)

All that partying and football watching took its toll, though, and our girl pooped out from all the excitement:

We all had a great day, and looking back, Mommy and Daddy probably could have benefitted from a nap, too :)

Hope everyone had a good Labor Day. Hubby and I actually had a full holiday together, so we spent the day grocery shopping and cleaning house. We've turned into the old married couple :) No fear. We completed all of those things in time to be seated in front of the TV for college football. This is definitely our coach-potato time of year :)

P.S. Did y'all see the Florida State / Miami game?!!! Hooo-wee what a game! Man, I love college football :)

WAAAAAR EAGLE!!

Obviously, we are sooo excited that football season has arrived :)

Diptacular 2009 at BooMama's

I always love to find new recipes, and with COLLEGE FOOTBALL UPON US, it is time to break out the dip recipes. BooMama is helping this along with her a pre-football carnival entitled:

How fun is that?! Especially since, quite often during football season, we basically munch on dippy-stuffs all day long and don't really cook. I mean, who has time to cook when there's all that football to watch?!!

I have to say up-front that I can't take credit for this recipe. I got from one of my bff's, Mary, who got it from her friend ... who got it from her mom ... who may or may not have gotten it from a Progresso can. However, it is super yummy, so enjoy!
Artichoke Dip with Roasted Red Peppers
•1 cup mayonnaise
•1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
•1 can or jar (12 to 14 ounces) artichoke hearts, drained
•1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
•1/8 teaspoon onion powder, optional
•1/4 cup minced roasted red pepper

Combine all ingredients in blender and blend :) Pour into a small casserole dish. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Sprinkle fresh grated Parmesan cheese on top and serve.

Serve cold, or heat in the oven for about 10 minutes at 350°. Don't reheat in the microwave or dip might separate. Serve with bagel chips, crackers, or bread.

Variation: Slice baguette and lay pieces on cookie sheet. Spread with dip and top with Parmesan cheese. Bake until warm, about 10 minutes.

I also can't claim authorship of this recipe. Plus, I think I'm not getting it all right because, well, Hubby usually does this one and he knows it by heart. If he would answer his cell phone I could double-check the correct-ness of this recipe. This is basically it. I don't think onions are part of the original recipe, but it sure does sound like a good addition :)

Trough
•1 lb ground beef
•1 can Hormel chili (bean/no-bean, whatever works for you - we use no-bean)
•1/2 sweet onion, diced
•1/2 large package Velveeta cheese
•1 can green chilies

Cook ground beef and onion until beef is done and onions are soft. Drain. Combine all ingredients in slow cooker. Cook on low, stirring occassionally. Serve with tortilla chips.
